What is different about this competition?

By combining the tasting palates from all over Europe, with some clever tasting and scoring techniques, this competition aims to give your wines the advantage.

To keep up with global trends and help producers sell more wine, several unique features were built into this competition, see below.

Scoring system

  • Wine styles and wine types will set their own standard within their category. As an example, the standards set for Bordeaux wines is totally separate and will not be applied to Vinho Verde.
  • Products are scored on a scoreless straight line on overall quality, and do not lose out because their score fell just short of an arbitrary round number.

Judging

  • Judges will be requested to judge all styles equally, and not to discriminate against a grassy style versus a fruity or earthy style. Every wine will be judged as if it was made for a certain market.
  • The judges will taste white and red wines in alternate flights whenever possible, to prevent tannin build-up or palate fatigue.

The Continental Taste Challenge was established to find quality wines across a broad spectrum of styles and price-points. The challenge’s purpose is to prove that wine enjoyment does not need to be concentrated into the hands of a select few wine connoisseurs. The competition will be awarding the finest wines to make them more widely available to global customers and wine-lovers. The challenge will prove that great wine doesn’t have to be un-affordable.

Wine enjoyment does not need to be concentrated into the hands of a select few wine connoisseurs, but can be for everyone.

FAQ's

What is the judging methodology?

All panellists will be wine professionals. We are sensitive to gender and age equity in our judging roster and try to staff each panel with judges who have professional diversity and experience. Our panels will have a minimum of three judges each. Judges may ask for a new bottle to be poured if they believe a product to be faulty or corked. A product will be disqualified if the second bottle is found to be faulty. Entries will be judged by country and region in their respective classes, and in order of vintage where necessary. The panel chair will assign a different tasting order to each judge (e.g. from low numbers to high or vice versa) in order to minimise the shadow effect within a flight. Tasters will judge each product on an overall basis. Products will be presented to the judges in numbered glasses. No sample bottles will be visible to the judges at any time. The judges will have no knowledge of the identity of the products, except for the minimum information needed to score. Staff members will be instructed to avoid discussing any brand names entered into the competition. The pouring area will be totally off-limits to the judges. Red wine flights will alternate with white wine flights where possible in order to prevent tannin build-up. Whenever possible, no more than 10 products of a particular class will be tasted consecutively to prevent flavour saturation.

How much does it cost to enter a product?

The cost is €95.00 per entry (no EU tax or other VAT is applicable). Gold and Platinum stickers/decals will be available at €37.00 per 1000 plus delivery (with no EU tax or other VAT applicable).

Gold and Platinum stickers/decals are R395 per 1000 excl VAT for collection in South Africa, to South African producers. Additional stickers/decals can be ordered online on a first come first served basis.

Do I have to order stickers/decals?

You are not obligated to order stickers/decals. If you do not want any, indicate the number on the online entry form as 0 (zero). Stickers/decals will be available approximately four weeks after the winners have been notified.

How many sample bottles are needed?

Wine samples should comprise of two 750ml bottles per entry. Wines in containers smaller than 750ml, a sample has to comprise three units. Send the wines with a pro forma invoice stating “Samples of no commercial value – THE CONTINENTAL TASTE CHALLENGE” to avoid paying customs clearance fees.

When will the stickers/decals be available?

The results of the competition will be available by the 18th of November, and entrants must confirm their sticker totals by the 19th of November.

Stickers will then be printed and sent out to the winners. We will endeavor to have the stickers/decals ready to be sent around 9th December 2019, but hopefully much sooner.

If there are any stickers/decals left from the print run, they will be made available to the winners, on a first come first served basis.

Will the tastings be audited?

The tastings will be audited by a reputable auditing firm to ensure that the judges are not influenced and the tasting is done blind and conforms to international standards.

Do I get a certificate if my product is awarded?

An electronic certificate will be sent by email to the winners. If the exact same product is sold under different brand names, you can request a certificate for each brand at no extra cost.

When will the winners be announced?

Results will be emailed to entrants on or before the 18th November 2019 to notify them. Entrants can utilise the stickers/decals and competition artwork to maximise exposure on various social media fronts and for their existing client base, but must display them together with the name(s) of the product, and vintage if applicable, that earned this accolade. Stickers/decals will focus attention on the award-winning products, leading to higher visibility and a boost in sales.

Can I enter unlabelled wine?

Unlabelled samples must be representative of the final product, and must be in their final bottled state. Tank samples are not allowed. Unlabelled wines can be entered as long as the sample bears all the details needed for entry on a sticker.
